Teen held on $500,000 bail in 'vicious and utterly pointless' bus attack

The Roxbury 16-year-old, not named because of his age, was ordered locked up in lieu of bail for a Tuesday-afternoon knife attack on another rider on a 23 bus at Ruggles and Tremont streets, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office says.

Even if the kid can raise the money, he'll remain behind bars because Boston Juvenile Court Judge Paul Lewis reovked his bail on outstanding drug and assault cases, according to the DA's office.

"From what we've gathered thus far, this was a vicious and utterly pointless attack," DA Dan Conley said. The Herald reports the teen and his victim, a 47-year-old man from Dorchester, got into "a heated exchange" over something as the bus pulled out of Ruggles station. The DA's office says the teen stabbed the man repeatedly before jumping off the bus and running down Whittier Street. He was captured by surveillance cameras on the bus.

Innocent, etc.

Court: Patient/psychiatrist privilege means state can't demand records in cases of possible prescription abuse

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today that a state law that makes psychotherapists' patient records private has no exceptions under which state investigators could take a look at them to determine whether the doctors are inappropriately prescribing drugs to their patients. Read more

The French Toast Alert is now at SEVERE, with the National Hurricane Center issuing a Hurricane Warning for the coast from the Cape to Hull - which means they expect hurricane-force winds to hit that area within 48 hours. Even away from the immediate coast, there's a good chance we'll be hit with tropical-storm-force winds - sustained winds of at least 39 m.p.h.

Of course, this means you should secure anything that could go flying in a storm - patio umbrellas, deck chairs, cows, etc.

Manhunt on for murderers of Hyde Park pizza delivery man

Death scene: 742 Hyde Park Ave.Death scene: 742 Hyde Park Ave.

A pizza-delivery man in his 50s was stabbed to death at 742 Hyde Park Ave. shortly before midnight by two men and a woman, who stole his car and then abandoned it behind a church a couple miles away, police say.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, speaking near the car behind St. Adalbart Church on River Street this morning, said evidence at the murder scene and in the car should help police find the trio even though they have fled the area.

Davis said the three broke into the Hyde Park Avenue house - which has been vacant for about a year - then called a local Domino's for a pizza. When the delivery man, not identified pending notification of his next of kind, arrived, they attacked and killed him.

Davis said somebody who had seen initial media reports about his Subaru wagon noticed it in the church parking lot and called police around 8:30 a.m.

Hurricane Correspondent Handbook:

The days before a hurricane are the most challenging for roving correspondents, because not much is happening. Needless to say, if you've got a choice between hanging out at the local Home Depot or cruising the beach, head immediately for the surf.

When the storm finally comes ashore, always stand dangerously near the rough water and position yourself so that the spray hits you directly in the face. If it's not raining yet, take off your hood and let the wind mess up your hair. Remember: A wet, tired and weather-beaten appearance is crucial to your credibility as a hurricane journalist.

State: Hospital directors waited too long to do something about CEO's relationship with employee

The state Attorney General's office says the $50,000 fine levied by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's board of directors against CEO Paul Levy was punishment enough. But the AG's office, which found no abuse of hospital funds, also criticized the directors for not putting a stop to the relationship earlier, even though some board members might have known about it as early as 2003:

Had (Levy) been called on his failure to act, or had his failure to act been reported to the entire Board, this acknowledged 'lapse of judgment' might never have occurred. For senior managers who reported to Levy, demanding a response was likely difficult. For Board members, it was their job.

Tropical-storm watch issued for Boston area

The National Weather Service says now would be a good time to bolt down things that could go flying in sustained 39-mph winds when Earl passes by sometime late Friday. The Cape and Islands, meanwhile, get a hurricane watch.

People who drive to work just don't realize how charming the T is

Ick

Somebody at the T must be slipping: As I rode the Orange Line to Back Bay today, only one side of the train was filled with all these BO ads (including a BO meter that ranged from "aromatic" to "putrid"). The other side just had boring ads for veteran outreach programs and solicitations for people who want to be human guinea pigs.

Going batty on Beacon Hill

Around 3:45 p.m. today, the Animal Rescue League of Boston tweeted:

The shadow knows!Lexington Police report the Watertown Savings Bank branch on Waltham Street was robbed yesterday - by the same pair that robbed it the day before:

The vehicle is a Chevy Avalanche, dark color black or green, with a mass registration of US18LH. This plate was later reported stolen from a Lawrence DPW worker while parked overnight in Arlington.

Celtics go West

The Boston Celtics have signed Delonte West to a contract for the upcoming season. This will be interesting for a lot of reasons including the fact that Delonte used to be a Celtic.

West was traded as part of the deal that brought Ray Allen as part of the "Big Three" and has bounced around since then. He was last seen in Boston Garden losing with the Cleveland LeBrons during the 2010 NBA Playoffs. It's unknown whether he will make the starting day roster yet, but he is capable of playing both the 1 or 2 position which makes for some potentially interesting sets with Rajon Rondo, Nate Robinson, and Ray Allen.

It also looks like this move might be useful at getting into LeBron's head during the game.

New broadband service launches in Boston area

I met today with some folks from Clearwire, which today launched a wireless broadband service in the Boston area. I'll have a more complete report later (and a coverage map), but for now, here are answers to questions folks asked me on Twitter:

  • Clearwire is working with Sprint and Comcast. It has no plans to work with Verizon or AT&T.
  • Clearwire does have a mobile hotspot gizmo that lets you connect an iSomething (Pad, Phone and Pod) to its network (it has a similar gizmo for PCs and other devices that can connect to WiFi)
  • The company has not talked to the MBTA about putting antennas in T tunnels; says it will once it finishes the buildout of its above-ground antennas over the next year or so.
  • The company plans to blanket the entire area within 128 first (looks to have about 60% covered now), then the area within 495. Currently uncovered areas include large parts of Roxbury, Hyde Park, Roslindale and West Roxbury and parts of Mattapan, Jamaica Plain and Dorchester.
  • The company is still looking for testers (will get contact info).

French Toast Alert, Earl edition

* French Toast Alert Level: Elevated. Explanation.

Run away!OK, the yellow toast flag has just gone up. Obviously, the French Toast Alert System was designed for winter storms, rather than tropical summer events, but then again, forecasters keep telling us part of their uncertainty with Earl is their models are all based on tropical conditions, not weather in the cool (hah!) North Atlantic, so we're even.

In any case, although our local TV forecasters are staying calm and measured (Matt Noyes at NECN even acknowledges he'd love to bust out, but as a Responsible Weatherman, just can't), but some amateur forecasters are kind of going nuts and we've got FEMA warning us to brush up on our evacuation routes now.
